Queso fresco. Fresh corn tortillas. Pozole. Cilantro. Peppers. Avocado. Onions. Homemade salsa. All of this (and more!) can be found in Saskatoon’s newest Mexican gem…….Mi Tierra.
Mi Tierra is a Mexican-owned restaurant on 22nd Street between Avenue U and V….and it is just what I expected – small and colorful, smiling-faced staff to greet you, and wafts of delicious, comforting smells coming from the kitchen. Oh, how so many great memories from Mexico came flooding back!
Their one-page menu is made up of tacos, enchiladas, burritos, fajitas, carne asada, chiles rellenos, soups, and wings. Note: not everything on the menu is available each day; available dishes are posted on a whiteboard but there is still plenty to choose from.
I went for a weekday lunch with my two friends, who also had never been here, and we all loved it! I had been looking forward to the chiles rellenos (cheese-stuffed peppers) but they are only available on weekends. I had the pozole (maize soup) and a bisteck (beef) taco – the waitress said this was her favorite taco (I always ask!). My friends started with the nachos and (very hot) salsa and then moved on to the barbacoa (tender beef), pastor (achiote and pineapple pork), chorizo, and bisteck tacos. My two friends agreed, their favorite taco was the barbacoa.
My bisteck taco was tasty and just the right size – tender pulled beef, chopped onions, cilantro, a slice of avocado, crumbled queso fresco (soft, white cheese) all on a perfect, soft corn tortilla. The tacos are small but packed with flavor – and are only $3.50, so next time I’m ordering more! The pozole (soup) was so flavorful – floating in the large bowl of warm, pepper-flavored, red broth were so many pieces of tender chicken and a ton of maize (corn), and on the side (which I added) were freshly chopped onions. There was also a bowl of oregano that smelled more potent and sweet than Italian oregano; I didn’t add it for fear of over powering the already great flavor. Sometimes I forget how much flavor Mexican food has……
So why do you need to eat here? Mi Tierra has that Mexican authenticity not found anywhere else in Saskatoon. Sure, you can get these dishes at many other restaurants in Saskatoon but they are typically tasteless, or cooked poorly, or missing ingredients. For those that love the tastes of Mexico (or don’t know them well), try this place ASAP. I can’t wait to go back!
There is also a small Mexican food store at the back of the restaurant. Next time, I’m buying a bag of dried ancho chiles…..
!Feliz mordeduras!
