Uno Mas o…..mucho mas?!

After a full day of work and spin class, what could be better than tacos and margaritas with great friends?! Nothing. Except maybe more tacos and more margaritas. Sigh, I was driving and had to work the next day, so one round had to suffice.

At a glance: Uno Mas is on 2nd Avenue in downtown Saskatoon and has only been open for a few months. It was previously the Bell n’ Whistle and chose to keep the same décor as Bell (slightly dingy). It’s an open, casual, pub/bar like atmosphere and from what we saw, not very busy on week nights.

When: Thursday, July 13th, 2017 at 7:00pm (with 6 of my friends)

What we ate:

Starters – I started with the tortilla soup – I love tortilla soup! The flavors and textures are everything I love about Mexican food, however, this one was just ok. It was too tomato based (versus a chicken broth base) and I didn’t get a lot of crunch from the tortillas; it is a comforting soup nonetheless. The tortilla soup I had in Nashville at Mas Tacos will never be beat (in Canada), so I’m a bit spoiled from that. Others ordered 2 rounds of shared nachos with 4 salsas; the salsa verde was amazing but the other salsas tasted somewhat phony or a bit like BBQ sauce (HP 😐 ). The guacamole which they make table side was really tasty – and you can tailor it to your taste preferences.

Tacos – We all ordered a lot of different kinds of tacos; fish, duck, pork belly, chipotle chicken, shrimp, and fried cheese. There was a ‘2 tacos for $5’ special on, so most of us ordered 4 (or more) tacos, seeing as they aren’t very big (see pictures above, top left moving clockwise – fried cheese taco, pork belly taco, 4 salsas starter, shrimp taco). They bring out the tacos a few at a time, as they’re ready, usually by type of taco. Our waitress tells us some people don’t like this – but we loved it – tacos, then more tacos, then a few more tacos, and…..more tacos! They had great timing with respect to when they brought the tacos out – as you were finishing one or two, the next few showed up.

I had the (lightly coated) fish, chipotle chicken, pork belly, and duck tacos. I loved the chipotle chicken; it was the most flavorful of them all. The rest were somewhat bland and required me to add leftover salsa verde or chipotle sauce. The pork belly and fish themselves were quite dry and the toppings looked tastier than they were. Overall the tacos were good but they didn’t blow my hair back.

I was insanely – insanely! – full when I left, all for a bill of ~$25.00, so overall the food is fairly cheap if you go on a night with specials. I believe the taco winner of the night was definitely the fried cheese taco. I didn’t have it but judging by the noises, comments, and the faces people made, I’ll be having them next time I go!

Drinks: I ordered a Barking Squirrel beer but then realized there were pitchers of lime margaritas at our table, so I had one small one. Next time it’s all margaritas for me – I don’t know what I was thinking. 😐

Not so great but who really cares: slightly dingy place, tacos are only above average with hints of great (to me, others at the table may disagree one way or another), but for me it’s about the whole experience; great friends, margaritas, cheap, tasty tacos, super casual atmosphere, and no line ups, so I’d still go back again – and again.

Honorable mention: cheap tacos on certain days, fun atmosphere with regard to eating style, pitchers of delicious, cold margaritas, and friendly and helpful staff

Happy bites! Feliz bocados!
